Have you ever looked in the mirror and thought to yourself, "I don't recognise that woman anymore. Who is she?"
In this episode of the Healing Practice podcast, we explore the profound identity shift that accompanies perimenopause and menopause. Often catching women by surprise at the tail end of matrescence (the long phase of mothering), this transition can trigger intense feelings of hypervigilance, confusion, and fear.
We reframe these up-and-down states away from guilt and shaming, moving instead toward a path of internal inquiry, physical release, and an authentic spiritual blossoming.
We dive into the structural reality of the menopausal transition, including:
- The Timeline of the Shift: Understanding the variable stages of the body's timeline, from early perimenopause (often surfacing around ages 43 to 45) to menopause (typically locking in between ages 50 and 52).
- The "Demon" Persona Trap: Normalising the sudden, frightening surges of irritability where a normally calm, regulated woman wants to snap everyone's head off.
- Dismantling the Medicalised Narrative: Realising that common symptoms like joint pain, brain fog, fatigue, and sweating are naturally occurring signs of an evolutionary shift, rather than a sickness requiring a diagnosis.
- The Trap of External Distraction: Why looking to external changes or romantic dalliances to "spark things up" disrupts the essential internal work of your changing identity.
Embracing Your Second Spring
Moving into menopause means your ovaries no longer need to produce eggs or grow babies. It is a transition into what is beautifully known as your Second Spring.
Just like natural spring weather, you will experience balmy, warm days followed by sudden frosts. Rather than fighting the climate change of your body, look at the woman in the mirror with deep appreciation, kindness, and a good old sense of humour.
The Internal Validation Circle
When an identity shift leaves you feeling nervously overwrought or overwhelmed by work and family, the natural temptation is to look outward for comfort. While assessing your tangible assets, talents, and family connections can provide temporary grounding, true stability must be self-generated. If anyone is going to give you a sense of reverence and validation, it must come directly from you.
Practical Steps for the Journey
- The Facial Yoga Jaw & Tongue Release: We hold a grim hardness and tension in our jaws, trying to keep our lives together. Break the lock by turning your head to the side, opening your mouth as wide as possible, and sticking your tongue out firmly for three to five seconds to stretch the musculature.
- The Cervical Decompression Stretch: Counteract the habits of sedentary work and high stress by pulling your shoulders down and gently moving your neck. Shift from a compressed, stooped position to a logical, elongated expansion of the spine.
- The Uncompromising "No": Every time you say no to the demands of others, you say an enriching yes to yourself, creating a vital space in your heart to receive. Practice saying a firm, clear "no." Not "maybe" and not softening it with "but perhaps tomorrow." Deliver it with a calm smile so it remains kind but completely unyielding.
Reflection Points
- When you look at your changing reflection in the mirror, are you grading her with self-criticism or holding her with a sense of gentle reverence?
- Are you attempting to mask the natural downregulation of your hormonal system with external distractions because you are afraid of the underlying shift?
- Where in your daily routine have you been automatically saying "yes" out of maternal conditioning when your capacity is crying out for a "no"?
