We live in a culture that tells women to push through exhaustion, but during perimenopause and menopause, your body is making a biological demand: it is time to rest.
In this episode of the Healing Practice podcast, we explore the concept of the Second Spring, the transformative phase of perimenopause and menopause. Just as adolescence marked your first bloom, the Second Spring is an evolutionary milestone where your body transitions from physical menstrual cycles to aligning directly with natural lunar cycles.
We discuss the societal expectation that women must constantly produce and be of service at the cost of their physical health, looking instead at how intentional rest and firm boundaries restore balance to an overworked endocrine system.
We dive into the structural reality of the menopausal transition, including:
- The Lunar Connection: Realising that when your monthly period ends, your biological system continues to respond to the natural ebb, flow, and cyclic rhythms of the moon.
- The Trap of Synthetic "Push Through": Understanding how relying solely on HRT or medicalisation to maintain an unsustainable work or domestic pace overrides your body's clear signal to slow down.
- The "Sandwich Generation" Pressure: Navigating the chaotic household collision where a mother's perimenopausal hormonal shifts occur simultaneously with her adolescent children's pubescent mood spikes.
- Breaking Free from the Home Castle: Overcoming the guilt of stepping out of the domestic space to build an independent, supportive network of female friendships.
Intergenerational Healing & Trauma
As explored in The Body Keeps the Score of Birth, unprocessed trauma does not simply disappear, but sits in the nervous system and creates a ripple effect throughout a family's lifecycle. When a woman carries unprocessed birthing fears or chronic emotional suppression into her 40s and 50s, those unaddressed states feed directly into her relationship with her children.
Recognising what is not working for you and choosing to heal it is a compassionate act of deep intergenerational responsibility. By learning to process your feelings rather than holding them in until you naturally combust, you break the cycle of generational stress and model authentic self-soothing for your children.
Redefining What "Rest" Means
Rest is not "slacking off," nor is it a sign of laziness. When estrogen and testosterone levels naturally shift, your body requires a neutral space to return to baseline. Rest can take many forms depending on what nourishes your nervous system:
- Tracking the Sun: Sit quietly by a window or step outside to follow the warmth of the sun's rays across your face, absorbing natural light and warmth.
- Low-Impact, Joyful Movement: Engage in gentle movement, such as slow walking, swimming, or restorative yoga, without the stressful goal of "pushing" for fitness.
- Flexible Meditation: Demystify meditation by letting go of the unrealistic goal of shutting off your thoughts completely. True meditation is simply sitting still, taking a break from doing, and allowing yourself to be present for 30 seconds at a time.
- Claiming "Time Out": Establish unyielding boundaries around your personal time. Communicate clearly to your family: "I love you all, but I need a time out right now," and step away to recharge.
Practical Somatic Steps for the Second Spring
- Express the "Combustible" State: Suppressing crankiness or anger only builds internal pressure until you erupt inappropriately. Use vocal articulation (supported by your vagus nerve) to speak your feelings aloud before they turn into an explosion.
- The Mirror Eye-Contact Reassurance: Look intently into your own eyes in the mirror and offer yourself an explicit, verbal validation: "I am a really good person, and I like who I am becoming."
- Build Your Out-of-House Circle: Schedule regular, non-family-focused dinners or outings with women friends at least once a month to expand your identity beyond domestic responsibilities.
- Consult for Nutritional Support: Partner with a qualified naturopath or nutritionist to balance your magnesium and calcium levels, supporting your bone health and nervous system during hormonal shifts.
Reflection Points
- Are you using medical or synthetic quick fixes to force your body to keep producing at an unsustainable pace?
- Where in your life are you allowing family members to trample over your personal boundaries because you feel guilty asking for a "time out"?
- What unsaid, "cranky" feelings are you holding inside today that need a safe, gentle outlet before they erupt?
