Parenting an adolescent from ages 11 to 17 is a long, changing phase filled with unpredictable shifts and unexpected challenges. When your teenager’s emotional overwhelm collides with your own ongoing life shifts, such as perimenopause or menopause, it can feel like a double-layered, daily collision in your home.
In this episode of the Healing Practice podcast, we explore how to offer meaningful somatic support for your teen without completely overwhelming your own nervous system. We discuss why trying to tightly control a growing adolescent's behaviour rarely works, and look at how to walk side-by-side as a calm, grounded guide using the philosophy of life calling life.
We dive into the somatic tools and nervous system education needed for this stage, including:
- The Nervous System Collision: Understanding why a teenager’s perceived arrogance or snappiness is more an indicator of an overwhelmed and low-capacity nervous system.
- Inviting Permission over Restrictive Control: Navigating safety, phone tracking, and social gatherings by asking for their permission and respecting their burgeoning autonomy.
- The Adolescent "Toddler" Volcanic Eruption: Recognising why teenagers erupt when they feel no one is reading the room or giving them the space to articulate themselves.
- Education as Empowerment: Teaching your teen about their vagus nerve and hormones so they can understand why their bodily responses happen that way and how to manage themselves with a lighter touch.
The Adult in the Room: Reading the Cues
Much like the toddler phase of learning to speak, an adolescent can experience intense internal pressure when trying to articulate who they are and what they need. When no one reads their cues, that frustration can turn into a volcanic outburst that startles everyone in the room, including the teen.
As the adult in the room, your role is not to exercise authoritarian control or jump into defensive arguments. Instead, your job is to read the room for them, step in before the eruption occurs, and offer a somatic reset that calms both of your nervous systems simultaneously.
The Vagus Nerve as a Regulation Highway
The vagus nerve (the 10th cranial nerve) is the wandering nerve that originates in the brainstem and meanders through the face, throat, chest, and abdomen down to the gut. Acting as the main highway for the parasympathetic nervous system, it controls our rest-and-digest functions, helps steady a racing heart rate, and aids digestion.
By teaching your teenager simple, fun ways to stimulate their vagus nerve, you give them lifelong somatic tools to regulate their stress, handle informational overload, and repair communication when conversations go off course.
Practical Somatic Steps for Teens
- The Three-Breath Reset: Catch your teen in the moment of rising overwhelm, make gentle eye contact if they allow it, and match their breath. Take three intentional breaths together: inhale softly, and use a long, slow exhalation to switch off the sympathetic fight-or-flight response.
- The Post-Eruption Pause & Repair: If a volcanic eruption happens, encourage your teen to take three breaths, place a hand over their heart, and give themselves a moment to step away. Use this quiet window to check in: "Do you want to speak about that now, or would you prefer to come back to it later?"
- Vocal Humming & Vowel Chanting: Practice humming or chanting vowel sounds (A-E-I-O-U) together. The internal vibration reverberates through the jaw, throat, and face, directly stimulating the vagus nerve and releasing stored tension.
- Somatic Touchpoints: Teach your teen to place one hand on their heart, one hand on their belly, and bring awareness to their throat. This grounding touch helps them check in with their physical body before attempting to articulate difficult feelings.
Reflection Points
- Are you attempting to restrict your teenager's behaviour out of genuine safety guidance, or out of a personal desire to maintain strict control?
- How can you use your own life experiences to validate your teen's transition rather than viewing their emotional outbursts as a personal attack?
- What light, humorous ways can you introduce vagus nerve regulation (like humming or breathwork) into your household routine?
