In an individualistic society that reveres independence, we are often led to believe that we must carry our heaviest burdens in isolation.

In this episode of the Healing Practice podcast, we explore the vital role of community and the biological truth that humans, and women in particular, were never designed to heal alone. From the rites of passage surrounding birth and death to navigating deep personal grief, women have historically moved through life's major transitions collectively.

We discuss how our nervous systems demand connection to prevent deep sadness from turning into chronic loneliness, and why asking for support is an act of deep personal autonomy. We dive into the structural dynamics of community healing, including:

  • The Myth of the Self-Made Individual: Recognising that no major achievement or healing milestone is ever gained entirely by oneself; we always rely on a supportive network behind us.
  • The Post-Funeral Drop-Off: Understanding the common trajectory of grief where immediate communal attention fades, requiring a woman to step up and actively voice her ongoing needs.
  • The Art of the Silent Witness: Honouring the profound, intuitive skill of women who act as "end-of-life doulas", holding space and witnessing pain without needing to insert themselves or fix the situation.
  • Nervous System Co-Regulation: Realising that isolation triggers a stress response in the body, whereas shared presence calms the nervous system during times of tragedy or shift.

Reclaiming the Skill of Asking for Help

Women are socialised to show up as the primary caregivers for everyone else's emotional trauma, sick days, and major life transitions. However, when a woman experiences her own catastrophic loss, such as the passing of a partner or a major life shift, she often forgets how to ask, "What do I need in this?"

As explored in Life Calls Life: Creativity Beyond Babies, breaking away or divesting yourself from a life of keeping a home and its domestic service, requires a woman to mostly advocate for herself. Healing collectively though, is very different, with a woman being able to call in the help she needs and to speak up for what that help looks like. Knowing that it will be offered and that she can receive it eases the burden of having to do it alone.  Asking for help is not meant to be a burden to your community; but more an invitation for others to offer the same non-judgmental, soft gestures that women so freely give.

Practical Somatic Steps for Collective Healing

Put Your Hand Up: Identify one specific area where you are currently struggling alone, and reach out to a trusted friend or family member with a direct request for support.

Practice "Sitting on Your Hands": When supporting a grieving loved one, resist the urge to offer advice or fix the problem. Practice simply sitting quietly, stilling your voice, and acting as a calm, contained witness to their process.

Break the Isolation Trap: If you catch yourself retreating into your home with deep sadness because it’s safer and you don’t want to burden others with your grief, go for a short local walk to walk upon your feelings; and seek to interrupt the cycle of isolation by reaching out to a friend or stepping into a shared community space.

Bonus Somatic Handout: Download our simple guide on how practices like vocal humming and vibration can stimulate the vagus nerve, soothe your throat, and restore calm during tense moments.

Reflection Points

  • Are you silently expecting others to anticipate your needs during a hard time, or can you practice clearly putting your hand up to ask for help?
  • Who in your community acts as a "silent witness" for you, offering a quiet, safe space where you don't have to put on a brave face?
  • In what ways can you lean into collective co-regulation rather than defaulting to isolating yourself when you feel overwhelmed?
